Diesel Exhaust Fluid F.A.Q

Diesel Exhaust Fluid

What is Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)?

Diesel Exhaust Fluid consist of high purity urea (typically crystalline) that is dissolved and suspended in de-ionized water. The approximate ratio of the mixture is 32.5% urea and 67.5% de-ionized water. To ensure optimum Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system performance, our DEF Solutions is American Petroleum Institute (API) certified and meets ISO 22241 Standards.
When DEF is used with Selective Catalytic Reduction system, it helps reduction the amount of NOx emissions. The reduction in emissions is required to meet the EPA published Tier 2 Emission Standards for Light Duty and Heavy Duty Vehicles. This standard regulates new strict emission control that began January 1, 2010.

How long does Diesel Exhaust Fluid Last?

Diesel exhaust fluid normally has a shelf life of about two years. However, exposure to sunlight or sustained high temperatures can compromise it.

What happens if DEF freezes?

Whether it's winter or spring, it's important to know what happens when Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) freezes. ... If DEF freezes, the correct ratio of deionized water to urea ensures that the fluid will not become overly concentrated or diluted as it thaws out. The freezing of DEF will not inhibit normal vehicle start-up

What temp will DEF freeze?

A 32.5% solution of DEF will begin to crystallize and freeze at 12 deg F (-11 deg C). At 32.5%, both the urea and water will freeze at the same rate, ensuring that as it thaws, the fluid does not become diluted, or over concentrated. The freezing and unthawing of DEF will not cause degradation of the product.

Can def be stored outside?

DEF should be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, out of direct sunlight. While the optimum storage temperature is up to 77 deg F (25 deg C), temporary exposure to higher temperatures has little to no impact on the quality of DEF.

How do you store diesel exhaust fluid?

Store indoors. DEF packages and bulk storage should be kept indoors in temperature-controlled environments. Use the right container. DEF is mildly corrosive, and should be stored in containers of HDPE plastic or stainless steel.

When was DEF fluid required?

Because almost all diesel-powered passenger cars and trucks built since 2010 are equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and require Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), it is readily available at most fueling stations and automotive parts retail stores. Truck stops often have a DEF pump right on the fuel island.

How Much Does DEF Weigh?

DEF weighs approximately 9 pounds per gallon.

Should I be concerned about handling DEF?

No. DEF is a nontoxic, nonpolluting, non-hazardous and nonflammable solution. It is stable, colorless, and meets accepted international standards for purity and composition. DEF is safe to handle and store and poses no serious risk to humans, animals, equipment or the environment when handled properly.

What should I do if I spill DEF?

If DEF is spilled, contain the spilled liquid and absorb it with an inert, non-combustible absorbent material, such as sand. Shovel the material into a suitable container for disposal. Spills into a drain should be avoided. If spilled into a drain, flush thoroughly with water. For significant quantities, contact local authorities for proper disposal procedures. If DEF is spilled on your vehicle, rinse with water.

Is DEF corrosive?

DEF is corrosive to copper and brass as well as other materials. Only approved materials, such as high density polyethylene (HDPE), will be used in the DEF tank, packaging and dispensing equipment.

What is API Certification?

What is API Certification?
API Certification is a voluntary program established by the American Petroleum Institute (API) which certifies and monitors that diesel exhaust fluid meets ISO specifications. The program was launched in March 2009. Cummins Filtration DEF currently meets ISO specification and is also API certified.
